Privacy Policy
OpenEtymology respects your privacy. Most features of OpenEtymology work entirely offline and do not require an account.
Information Collection
OpenEtymology does not require user registration and does not collect personal information such as:
- Email addresses
- Usernames
- Phone numbers
- Location data
The app does not use advertising SDKs or third-party tracking systems.
Local Data Storage
Search history and favorite words are stored locally on your device for your personal use. This data is not uploaded to external servers.
Abuse Prevention
The web version may use an anonymous, HTTP-only cookie to limit automated scraping and keep search fast for regular visitors. This cookie is not used for advertising or cross-site tracking.
Clipboard Access
OpenEtymology may access clipboard content only when the user explicitly taps the paste button for word lookup purposes. The app does not automatically monitor or read clipboard content in the background.
Pronunciation Audio
Pronunciation playback may rely on the device's built-in text-to-speech system.
Analytics & Diagnostics
The web version records basic first-party usage events, including page views, submitted search terms, opened entries, and approximate scroll depth. Technical request information such as User-Agent, referring page, browser language, device category, and automated-client indicators may also be stored for security and service-quality analysis. IP addresses and proxy-chain addresses are converted to salted SHA-256 hashes before storage; raw IP addresses are not retained in the analytics database. These records are stored on the OpenEtymology server, are visible only in a private admin dashboard, and are not shared with advertising networks or third-party analytics services.
Future Features
Future versions of OpenEtymology may introduce optional cloud-based features such as account systems or synchronization services. If these features are introduced, this Privacy Policy may be updated accordingly.
